Google Camera Port with Portrait Mode now works on Samsung Galaxy S7, S8, and Note 8 (Exynos) Popular ports of the Pixel 2’s Google Camera bring Google’s post-processing technologies to a wide range of high-end devices. It took a few iterations, but the most recent releases support lens blur, bokeh adjustment, and high-resolution video recording modes on phones such as the OnePlus 3 , the Samsung Galaxy S8 , and the LG V30 . This week, XDA Senior Member miniuser123  fixed a niggling issue with Exynos-based devices: Portrait mode. His modified Google Camera app gets portrait mode — the camera effect that blurs out your selfie’s background and brings your face into focus — to smartphones with Samsung’s in-house Exynos processors, which include the international editions of the Galaxy S7 , S8, and Note 8 . With the app installed and a few tweaks applied in the Settings menu, it’s seamless — albeit a bit slower than devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon system-on-chips. And for now, it onl

Samsung Bixby Will Soon be Able to Count Calories in Food Applications such as  MyFitnessPal and other calorie counters help people monitor what eat throughout the day, which makes it easier to see how many calories they have left in their daily allotment. But measuring food portions on the go can be tough, which is why Samsung’s updating is Bixby assistant with the ability to estimate calories from photos of food. But the company showed that it can tell the difference between dishes like a margarita pizza and a steak. Since Bixby isn’t using a special sensor to analyze nutritional content, there’s a bit of a variance in the actual calorie count versus what’s reported, and Samsung’s using “generic data” for food items. Still, it’s fas

Motorola Releases Android Oreo Kernel Sources for the Moto Z2 Force When it comes to releasing kernel sources, some manufacturers have a better track record than others. Android’s use of the GPLv2 license requires that all sources be released in a timely manner, but we continue to see violations . They’re bad for the affected devices because they hinder development, but they also harm Android and the open source community’s integrity,  which is why we’ve requested multiple OEMs to comply with the GPL and release kernel sources in the past. Motorola, which is owned by Lenovo, generally releases kernel sources for its devices on time — but  the company’s occasionally slipped . The Moto Z2 Force ‘s sources were released in September, two months after its launch. It’s the company’s newest flagship phone, and the Verizon and T-Mobile variants of the device recently received an update to Android 8.0 Oreo. That necessitated another release of kernel sources, and Motorola’s compiled, publ
